El Celler de Can Roca is a family-owned restaurant that has been serving modern Spanish cuisine since it opened in 1986.
The restaurant owners, the Roca brothers (there are three of them, Joan, Josep and Jordi) grew up in the kitchen, their parents owned a bar right close by where the boys opened their restaurant.
These three brothers have individual duties. Joan is the head chef, Josep is the wine guru and Jordi is the pastry chef. Many would say starting a business with your siblings can be true hell. Mughal Empire, Borgias and Gucci are proof of how hard working with family can be. However, much to our relief, these three brothers have kept it together and risen number one, together.
Their team work, their creativity and their ethic have made their restaurant so sought after that tables are booked for over a year ahead allowing the booking line to only be open for one hour a month.
The restaurant currently holds three Michelin stars, and has been compared to the former number one (5 times) restaurant El Bulli, which also served Catalan and modern Spanish cuisine until 2011, when it closed down. Joan, the eldest, and with spectacular catering and culinary degrees and career, worked for elBulli in in 1989. But be not mistaken, Celler de Can Roca is not another elBulli.
Joan (whom we can credit nominally) has an avant-garde approach that allows his imagination and knowledge experiment with modern techniques and hence, Catalan gastronomy. He does not build a dish if it is not challenging enough and by doing so, he somehow finds a way to marry modernity with Spanish tradition.
If you are keen to visit the best restaurant in the world, take note of one thing, you be ready to pay and well. A meal can reach upto $248 per person… enjoy!
